Its own language


As in every specialist field, the Fish Auction and the fisheries have their own language, a jargon in which the auction co-workers, the fishermen and the merchants communicate. Afslag
General term for auction, named after the striking of the auction clock by a merchant at the moment when the price he desires is reached

Afslager
The person who operates the auction clock

Dagboot
Relatively small fishing-vessels that put to sea in the evening and return the following day. The crew usually consists of just 3 persons.

Dockshelter
Loading tunnels with temperature regulation

Flessen
Ink-fish

Hammen
Tail of monkfish

Hondjes
Small shark

Hornaart
Breskens word for shrimp

Katten
Cuttlefish (a sort of ink-fish)

Lappen
Largest grading of sole

Mijnen
Agreement by the merchant to the price reached on the auction clock. Prior to a clock being used, the auctioneer called the lower prices each time and the merchant shouted out “mine” when he wanted to buy the consignment of fish at the price named at that moment.
